Note from Dr. Goren

Dear Walker Community,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Ginger Lumpkin as the next principal of Walker Elementary School. Ms. Lumpkin will officially join our team on July 1, 2017. As part of the selection process, we met with a diverse group of teachers, educational support staff, parents, and administrators to develop a leadership profile that identified the skills and attributes desired for the next principal of Walker Elementary. The information contained within the leadership profile was used to narrow down a pool of dozens of qualified applicants. Those that were identified as a strong fit for the role were invited to participate in a community forum and also were interviewed by a committee of teachers, parents, and administrators. Ms. Lumpkin is an accomplished educator who recognizes the vital importance of collaboration with teachers, support staff, and families in building a strong community of learners. I am confident she will be a strong leader for the Walker community and a great asset to our school leadership team.

Ms. Lumpkin started her educational career as a student teacher in District 65 at Chute Middle School. For the past four years, Ms. Lumpkin served as principal at John C. Haines Elementary School in Chicago. She also served as the assistant principal at Walter Payton College Preparatory High School for five years and as a classroom teacher, technology instructor, and department chair in the Chicago Public School system. She is a veteran educator with over 20 years of experience serving in diverse school settings. Ms. Lumpkin holds a Master of Education from Lewis University and Bachelor of Arts in Education from Northwestern University.

Ms. Lumpkin has expressed great enthusiasm in joining our team and is excited about working closely with district leadership and the entire staff at Walker to ensure a smooth transition. More information about a ‘meet and greet’ opportunity will be sent this summer. Please join me in welcoming Ms. Ginger Lumpkin to Walker Elementary and District 65.

Kind Regards,

Paul Goren
Superintendent of Schools

D65 Referendum Information – VOTE YES ON APRIL 4

Many More Students, Huge Structural Budget Problem: District 65 has welcomed nearly 1,500 new students in the last 10 years. It costs $20 million annually to educate these new kids, but only $3.5 million has been added to the property tax rolls. Property taxes account for 75% of our education budget. Strict tax caps limit how much schools get regardless of how much our home’s value increases. Illinois ranks dead last nationally in state funding for public education. This has created a cumulative $112 million budget hole over the next 8 years.

Cutting Costs, Strategic Spending: Almost $11 million has been cut from our budget over the last several years, while protecting classrooms. Our teachers are helping save an additional $2.6 million over the next three years.

While Still Making Many Impressive Gains: More students are making annual academic growth targets. In just two years, students who meet or exceed national averages are up 8% in math and 9% in reading. Struggling readers are catching up. Over the same period, the number of students whose scores fell in the bottom 25% nationally dropped by more than 13%.

A Springfield or DC bailout isn’t coming. The only option is to help ourselves. The consequences are dire if we don’t: Class sizes of 30+, Forcing kids into other schools, Multi-grade classrooms, Closing schools, Curriculum & enrichment programming slashed, Teachers laid off. The average homeowner would pay $1.25 more per day, which is $39 a month.

Strategically Spending The New Revenue: Balanced budgets for the next 8 years, more innovation and technology, strengthen core curriculum, continue investments in enhancing equity & reducing achievement gap, maintaining partnerships and investing in long overdue capital projects.

D65 Black & Latino Parent Advisory Meeting 2/21 6:30pm @ Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Literacy & Fine Arts School

Dear District 65 Families,

Last spring, we convened our first Black and Latino parent advisory meetings focused on student achievement. The feedback gathered during these sessions was used to inform the development of the District 65 Racial and Educational Equity Statement which was approved by the School Board on August 29, 2016. This statement serves as a guidepost for our equity work district-wide. As  we strive to  better meet the needs of our Black and Latino students and families we commit to:

Continue our focus on K-3 literacy and interventions for striving students,
ongoing professional development to address institutional racism and bias, and
classes and workshop support for families on reading skills, computer literacy building community.
On Tuesday, February 21, we invite you to continue this conversation, hear updates on our equity initiatives, provide feedback and begin to build community with one another. The next Black and Latino Parent Advisory Meeting will be held from 6:30-8:00pm at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Literary and Fine Arts School (2424 Lake Street).

Open to all District 65 family members. Spanish interpretation and childcare will be available.

Thanks in advance for your commitment to working together for our children.

Sincerely,
Ismalis Nuñez, Family & Community Engagement Coordinator
Corrie Wallace, Equity Consultant
