District 65 Next Steps Series

Next Steps session 1 Eng
Are you deeply concerned about and looking to change the academic and discipline racial disparities we have right here in District 65?
Join us as co-author Dr. John Diamond kicks-off an education and action series framed around his book “Despite the Best Intentions: How racial inequality thrives in good schools.” This series sprang from the well-received and well-attended author event last spring.
This series Next Steps: Parenting in our racially diverse community: the rewards, challenges, and possibilities launches:

Thursday, September 27
6:30 – 8:30pm
Nichols Middle School library, 800 Greenleaf
Spanish translation and child care provided.
Supported in part by Nichols, Washington, Dewey, and Lincoln PTAs.
This programming is unique in its in-depth focus on the challenges facing our schools and the possible solutions. We encourage (though don’t require) people to attend as many sessions as possible because each will build on the previous and will culminate with action steps. Click here to sign up for summaries that will be sent after each session for those who weren’t able to attend.
We are fortunate to have both John Diamond and co-author Amanda Lewis in the Chicago area: Diamond is a former Nichols parent. Reading the book will enhance your experience, but is not required.
Save the dates:
Nov. 5: Co-author Amanda Lewis, who will introduce the concept of opportunity hoarding
Nov. 29: Nichols Principal Adrian Harries and Assistant Principal Josh Seldess, who will review D65 achievement and discipline data
You can learn more about “Despite the Best Intentions” from John Diamond here. The book was cited in this recent Time Magazine article.
****
