Join District 65 for the communitywide Juneteenth Parade & Celebration

District 65 has been invited to participate in Evanston’s 4th Annual Juneteenth Parade and Celebration to be held on Saturday, June 17. In an effort to build community and celebrate this historic day, we are inviting interested staff, students, and their families to represent our school district as part of the parade which will also include performances by The Jesse White Tumblers, South Shore Drill Team, and representation from various organizations across our community.

Juneteenth (June 19) is a historic day commemorating enslaved African Americans’ emancipation. It is a day of celebration, remembrance, and reflection and is now a state and federal holiday! Our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Team will host an event on Friday, June 16, at the Joseph E. Hill Education Center (1500 McDaniel Avenue, Evanston) from 4 – 7 pm to make signs and decorations. 

Our goal is to represent District 65’s efforts toward diversity and inclusion and bring our community together to celebrate the progress made since Juneteenth while acknowledging the work still left to do to achieve true equality. We would love to gather 100 people!

Event Details: The parade will include performances by the South Shore Drill Team and The Jesse White Tumblers, floats, walking groups, marching bands, and cars. The commemoration will continue where the parade ends at Ingraham Park until 6 pm with art, music, food, vendors, and speakers.

March with us: We will walk as a district, interact with community members on the parade route (2.3 miles), and show off our D65 spirit.  

Date & time: Saturday, June 17, 2023. The parade start time is 10:30 am. Meet at Robert Crown Community Center, 1801 Main Street, Evanston to march at 10 am

After celebration: 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm, Ingraham Park (behind Civic Center) 2100 Ridge Ave, Evanston

Attire: Juneteenth gear or a Black shirt

Our P.E. staff are busy planning Field Day for the kids and need your help! The kids get to spend
half of their day outside playing fun physical games, including Moving with Mr. Marcus, an
obstacle course, several exciting relay races and fun games! This fun event is held on the Walker playground and athletic fields.

We need parents/caregivers or even high schoolers (service hours) to help us man our rotating stations. We also need help with set-up and clean-up as well as snack donations. If you would like to volunteer, please sign up here and if you have any questions, please contact Mrs Likhite at likhitea@district65.net. Rain date: June 1st.

First Tee – Greater Chicago empowers kids and teens aged 7-18 through the game of golf. First Tee’s trained coaches not only provide an introduction to junior golf and an opportunity to enhance golf skills, but they also create a safe, supportive, and empowering environment to help your child prepare for life ahead, including friendships, school, college and even their careers. 

First Tee – Greater Chicago is launching a campaign to support a First Tee youth campus at Canal Shores that will enable them to:

• Impact the youth of Evanston, Wilmette and surrounding communities through their life skills programming, a reimagined practice area, and on-course access

• Create a unique opportunity for our First Tee participants to become caddies and pursue Evans Scholarships, in partnership with the Western Golf Association

• Continue their concerted efforts to connect with local schools and community organizations to expand our programming to kids in all regions of Chicago.

Do you know an Evanston student interested in competitive youth travel soccer with positive coaching and a great community?

Consider Evanston AYSO EXTRA! Scholarships are available! Tryouts begin Saturday, May 13. Registration is now open. Evanston AYSO EXTRA has two divisions: 10U and 12U for youth born from 2012 to 2015 

Here are some highlights:

• AYSO EXTRA is competitive travel soccer within AYSO; there is a cost to participate, but scholarships are available.
• EXTRA teams have well-trained, experienced volunteer coaches, and many practices include professional trainers.
• EXTRA offers a year-long program (fall, winter and spring).
• EXTRA team members play on both a regular Core AYSO Team and the EXTRA Team.  
• EXTRA is a tryout-based program.

¿Conoce usted a un estudiante de Evanston que le interese el fútbol juvenil competitivo que tenga entrenadores positivos y sea parte de una gran comunidad?

¡Considere Evanston AYSO EXTRA! (La Organización norteamericana de fútbol juvenil) ¡Hay becas disponibles! Las pruebas comienzan el sábado 13 de mayo. La inscripción está abierta. Evanston AYSO EXTRA tiene dos divisiones: 10U y 12U para jóvenes nacidos entre 2012 y 2015.

Aquí hay algunos puntos de interés:

• AYSO EXTRA es fútbol de viaje competitivo dentro de AYSO; hay un costo para participar, pero hay becas disponibles.
•  Los equipos de EXTRA tienen entrenadores voluntarios con experiencia, y muchos entrenamientos incluyen entrenadores profesionales.
•  EXTRA ofrece un programa de un año (otoño, invierno y primavera).
•  Los miembros del equipo EXTRA juegan tanto en un equipo regular Core AYSO como en el equipo EXTRA.
•  EXTRA es un programa basado en (try-outs) pruebas para seleccionar a los jugadores.
